Solved: Which printer to buy for bar code printing?

I thought I posted a longer write up stating the software I use which is from Zebra .. Zebradesigner 3 .  I watched a few YouTube videos how to setup my labels then the software is pretty easy to use.

Tips for Zebra Designer 3 Video

In this software you can choose multiple barcodes both 1D and 2D.  You type in or copy paste the text you want choose the Barcode you want ( easy as choosing a font in Word) and the software makes the Barcode for you.  You just need to choose the size in mils you want.  When you choose the size it spaces and sizes the barcode to be read by scanners.  You can also tell the software to put the text by the barcode or place a text box and type in or paste the text you want to appear by your barcode.  I put the item name by mine so I know what to put the label on.  After printing out a test label and making sure my scanner reads it, since I try for small 1/4" 2D barcode labels which pushes the limits for size, I save the label so I can just come back later and tell it to print how many I need.  The File save as feature is just like saving a document to a folder, I create folder for these labels only.  I organize it by categories to fit my needs so the labels are quick and easy to find to print again later.  I also saw you can purchase the Zebradesigner 3 Pro software that can pull data from a database or excel spreadsheet, which is how Square exports items as an Excel Spreadsheet.

Zebra also came out with some ZSB printers that are WIFI and Bluetooth capable.  The 2 inch wide one is about $130 Zebra ZSB-DP-12 and the 4 inch wide one is about $230 Zebra ZSB-DP14.  These printers use the ZSB software that I do not use to create labels.  These are prices from places like Staples for these models or on Amazon.

But if you google or look on YouTube there maybe a video like the one above

Print barcode product - V5 Question - SambaClub Forum

There isn’t a direct way to do this with SambaPOS. You will need a barcode printer to print decent quality labels, although it’s still possible using a normal laser / inkjet printer but will be less flexible. Most barcode label printers come with some software bundled, and depending on your needs, you can just use that software to print barcodes. You might also be able to connect to the MSSQL database of SambaPOS from this software and pull in some product details for the labels. Using the specific software will definitely give you the best results with regard to layout of the labels.

Now, with regard to getting something working from within SambaPOS, there was a post before (I’ve linked below) that had a method of printing a label from the POS screen. It generally meant selecting the item on the ticket then pressing a button to print. There is definitely another more in-depth topic about this on the forum but I can’t find it!

Printer Template Vs Report Templates and Barcodes

V5 Question

Ok quick questions. The idea was to use SambaPOS to print STOCK BARCODE LABELS - since SamaPOS can print “BAR39” and “QR” codes I thought it would be easy enough to print Barcodes directly from SambaPOS using Automation. So can someone verify you cannot use “BAR39” in a Report Template? Seems only available in Ticket Printing. So if this is the case I must be in a Ticket right, as Ticket Template Commands typically require a Ticket? So the next idea was when a Stock Item is selec…

That is one way to do it anyway, for sure there are other approaches but it really depends on your needs - like how many labels you need to print, when you need to print, etc.

Your next issue you will reach is getting layout in the printer template for the labels - most barcode label printers don’t support the ESC/POS language (like receipt printers use) therefore you need to use the Raw Printer and in your printer template, write the exact commands to print the layout depending on the command language used by the printer (typically some form of the TSPL language). If you search on forum there are some others have some examples for printing in this format but it varies depending on your actual printer.

Definitely printing on 3 column labels is going to be more tricky than single labels per line.

The labels you mention for the shelves are called shelf edge labels typically. Depending on your store configuration, if you have shelf edges that can hold a paper “ticket” in place (like in supermarkets) you will find it more convenient to use paper instead of sticky label. And this also simplifies printing from SambaPOS because you could in theory print the shelf edge labels using your thermal receipt printer - layout template will be more easy.

On a side note, I do love Tesco’s promotion - 52p each or 2 for £1.70… I’ll take 2 for £1.04 thanks! (I’m sure promo is across all soft drinks but still…)
